My sister got married on June 6, 2021 at Dry Creek Chapel surrounded by friends and family to celebrate. I had the privilege of standing by her side as her Maid of Honor and gave a short speech during the reception. Thankfully all the right words came to me right before I arrived at the venue that morning, and I want to share them here in this space.

…..

Hi everyone, I’m Hannah. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Bekahs older sister. I want to take a moment to thank you all for being here tonight to celebrate the marriage of my sister and my new brother-in-law.

So much can be said about the special bond that siblings share, having survived childhood together with all the growing pains that those years have, and the fact that it is most likely going to be the longest relationship you’ll ever have in your life. Growing up, Bekah was the best little sister. She let me use her as the test subject for my hair-cutting experiments that I did behind our mom’s back, was great at keeping my secrets from my parents, and always had my back even when I didn’t deserve it. There was this one time I was in time-out and my punishment was to stand with my nose in a corner of a wall in the house. Bekah didn’t want me to have to suffer the punishment alone, so even though she wasn’t in trouble, she went and stood in the adjacent corner with her nose in it too with a smile on her face and absolutely happy to do it. She was and still is one of the most cheerful people I know, which used to drive me crazy when I was doing my best to get on her nerves or get her in trouble (older siblings know how hard this is to do since the baby of the family always gets away with everything).

The term “built-in best friend” is often used to describe the relationship between sisters. The “built-in” part comes from us being sisters, but the “friend” part has come from actively loving and being there for each other. Thankfully as we grew older we started sharing our hearts with each other and cheering each other on in the things we were doing, and a real friendship beyond just being sisters grew into something really special. She has been my biggest cheerleader, a trusted confidant, and the light of my life. If you’ve spent any time with my sister, you know that she can brighten any day with her joyful spirit, charming charisma, and infectious smile. Having her as a friend is such a blessing and gift, and Zac is such a lucky guy to now have her as his very best friend for the rest of their lives together.

Zac, welcome to our family. I pray that the Lord blesses your marriage and that you both have a lifetime full of love and happiness together.
